DUMBO is one of the most photogenic neighborhoods in all of New York City — and as an NYC engagement photographer, it’s one of my favorite places to shoot. The mix of cobblestone streets, iron bridges, and iconic Manhattan views creates images that feel cinematic and timeless. Here’s everything you need to know before booking your DUMBO engagement session.
The Washington Street Arch Shot
This is the shot everyone knows — the Manhattan Bridge perfectly framed between the brick buildings on Washington Street. It’s iconic for a reason. The key is timing: arrive early morning on a weekday (before 9am) to avoid the crowds that gather here by mid-morning. The light at sunrise coming down the street is extraordinary. This is the #1 most requested spot and for good reason.
Brooklyn Bridge Park
Just steps from Washington Street, Brooklyn Bridge Park offers sweeping views of Manhattan, the Brooklyn Bridge, and the East River. The piers provide different perspectives and backdrops. Pier 1 and Pier 6 are both excellent. The wildflower gardens in spring and summer add beautiful foreground texture. Golden hour here is genuinely spectacular.
Main Street Cobblestones
The brick and cobblestone streets of DUMBO’s main drag offer a classic, editorial feel. The narrow streets create natural leading lines and the textures — old brick walls, iron fire escapes, vintage storefronts — give every frame incredible depth and character. This works beautifully for couples who want something more intimate and street-style.
Empire Fulton Ferry
This historic ferry landing area sits right under the Brooklyn Bridge and offers a completely different energy — quieter, more industrial, with the massive bridge cables overhead creating a dramatic, architectural feel. The light filtering through the bridge structure mid-morning is unlike anywhere else in the city.
Pebble Beach
For something completely unexpected, Pebble Beach sits under the Manhattan Bridge and offers direct waterfront access with both bridges in view. It feels hidden and secret. Couples who find this spot always love it — it’s genuinely one of the most romantic spots in Brooklyn.
Practical Tips for Your DUMBO Shoot
Best times: Sunrise to 9am on weekdays, or golden hour any day. Avoid Saturday afternoons — the entire neighborhood is packed with tourists. Parking: Washington Street often has street parking early morning. Dress code: DUMBO’s textures and colors look best with classic, neutral tones — whites, creams, navy, sage. Avoid busy patterns.
